S3 Graphics just announced the Chrome 400 ULP Series for mobile devices
like mini-notes, netbooks and notebooks in general. As the name
indicates, the Chrome 400 ULP Series is based on the standard Chrome
400 Series (with the same features and capabilities), but with lower
power consumption: Chrome 400 ULP Series is said to need less than 7 W
at maximum power consumption! There are currently three models: Chrome 430 ULP, Chrome 435 ULP and Chrome 440 ULP. The only difference between those versions is the clock rate which leads to different power consumptions, 3D speed and therefore also different Multimedia capabilities. The ChromotionHD 2.0 Engine of Chrome 435 ULP and Chrome 440 ULP support "dual-stream Blu-ray or Blu-ray Picture-in-Picture (PiP)" while Chrome 430 ULP is simply to slow for that feature. To summarize it: Chrome 400 ULP Series has the same features as Chrome 400 Series, but it's optimized for the use in mobile devices! Anyway, those mobile GPUs seem to be perfect for a performance increase of the graphics solutions in low-power and low-cost devices like the currently heavy popular netbooks but also in mid-range notebooks. It's unclear when first products will hit the shelves, but Fujitsu is supposed to announce some products soon (Press release: "The S3 Graphics Chrome 400 ULP series is now shipping, and notebook OEM customers include Fujitsu.")
